Practitioner MentorshipÂ
Â
Hey! If this is your first time coming through, allow me to introduce myself. I'm Matt Rowe, PT and I want to thank you for your interest and shake your hand for seeking out that next step in your career. I’m not getting straight A’s in all areas of my life, but one thing I excel at is my role as a physiotherapist and helping practitioners of all stages leverage more in their careers. I’ve been a private practice physiotherapist for 13 years and throughout my career I’ve worn many hats in the private sector. From starting as an employee to moving into the independent contractor, self-employed, corporation structure, to clinical coordinator, director, management, and running clinics. I’ve always had a special interest in the business aspect of our industry, while taking countless post-graduate technical skills and education courses to ensure I am operating at a high standard as a clinician. I mention this to assure you are working with a colleague who is equally passionate and committed to providing a high-level treatment and an exceptional client experience.Â
As much post-graduate training as I've taken as a clinician, I've received an equal amount of business education: formal training through UofM, UPenn, and more, along with informal training through 1:1 coaching, workshops, books, seminars, and masterminds, in no particular order of importance. Through these avenues I've covered everything from business strategy, leadership, operations, marketing, sales, finance, communications, contract law, negotiation, accounting (can confirm, still gross, but so necessary for us to understand the basics), along with business and high performance coaching.
Since I started working for myself, I truly love being a clinician again. Although this is only part-time since getting pulled in the mentorship direction, I have no plans of giving up being a clinician. I enjoy it that much and I want that feeling for you as well. I will be staying a solo practitioner for the foreseeable future and wish to help those on a similar path leverage more in their career on all fronts. Should you be on the path to clinic ownership one day, I highly encourage you to learn these skills and build your business foundation before embarking on that very impactful and rewarding venture. Join the community and we’ll game plan for the future together. If you are reading this and you are ready to go all in on clinic ownership now, please reach out and I will introduce you to colleagues who are doing great things in the clinic world and will be a better fit for helping you.
Four years ago, I started a mentorship program to help practitioners begin to look at their practice through the lens of a business. This isn't about being money driven or operating as a factory practitioner. This is about truly knowing your worth, understanding what you bring to the table, and knowing it is more than okay to want more for yourself and your family. So many practitioners I’ve worked with still operate in the employee mindset, despite being self-employed independent contractors for years. This is through no fault of their own, as our traditional education system is designed to create great employees. Do we need those who thrive in the employee structure? Absolutely we do. However if you're visiting this page, you're most likely someone looking for more.
So many healthcare professionals are givers. We give and give to everyone in our lives, especially our clients/patients, and often to the detriment of our own wellbeing. More and more I am seeing practitioners looking to other industries for another income stream to help them get ahead, or unfortunately enough, contemplating leaving their profession all together.
I hold certifications in business and entrepreneurial coaching, however with coaching being such an unregulated industry I do not place much stock in these. The purpose of that training was to ensure our mentorship sessions are structured effectively. A little behind the scenes chat: I was very happy keeping this mentorship program low key, working with practitioners 1:1, while continuing as a clinician doing what I love. Four years full-on into this, my confidence in these teachings and repeatable processes has grown exponentially with the amount of practitioners who have been positively impacted. I felt I was doing a disservice to our professions by not spreading the word and offering tons of value to practitioners to help more and more of these incredible humans not just get ahead, but thrive. Despite never being a fan of social media, that feeling is what led to ripping off the band-aid, joining the circus on Instagram, and developing Practitioner Provisions. I truly believe in sharing what we all learn. There is more than enough for us all to eat and live well. I'm going to continue to progress in personal and professional development over the years so why not share it with you. Whether you invest in the course and mentorship or not, SideHustle.health on Instagram and the free resource Practitioner Provisions will offer actionable strategies, industry insights, education and tons of value that will benefit you in your practice.
Okay, almost there... (shoot me a "made it through your TED talk" message if you made it this far!)
To wrap it up here, I want to state that I'm not a financial advisor and will not attempt to direct you on where to invest your hard earned income, nor do I feel qualified to do so. I simply want to help you maximize your earning potential, while increasing the level of security and fulfillment in your career. I don’t have an MBA or a business degree. I did a deep dive into these programs and so much of what is taught is not applicable to us as practitioners in the private wellness sector. The self-starter side wouldn’t allow me to pay for the letters or piece of paper in an attempt to improve my credibility. I’ve taken the necessary courses that are pertinent and add practical value to us as practitioners and combined this with years of industry experience. I want to help others by sharing all that I have learned in my career, and will continue to learn.Â
If you’re looking for the drill sergeant mentorship style where you need to be barked at to take massive action, that’s not me. Small steps compound over time and lead to giant leaps There are plenty of sides to this coin and I assure you we will find a way to make a significant impact in your career and work together to make true change. Myself and the Side Hustle Community will be there every step of the way when you have questions, need a spark of motivation, want to bounce ideas off other growth-minded practitioners, or are in need of an accountability buddy. My innate mentorship style is to meet you wherever you are in your career. I will deliver with empathy and understanding of what is realistic given your current life circumstances, while always operating in the utmost integrity.
Whatever more looks like for you in your career, I want to help you find it.Â
